Others require high-density ones. Resolution refers effectively to the amount of information in an image, and more concretely to its dimensions measured in pixels.
The amount of detail you capture in an image—whether a photo, scan, or graphic—is directly related to its resolution, as to capture ever more detail, you need ever more pixels. You might need quite a lot of pixels to provide a zoomable image of something with a lot of detail, like a machine, or to print a large-format photograph.
Resolution defines how much information or distinct detail is in an image, measured in pixels. Density, typically in ppi, is how resolution is mapped to scale on a display or when printing. It may help to think of a pixel as a mosaic tile. Individually, it may mean nothing but placed within a larger image, it contributes to the whole.
The smaller the tile and the more tiles in a mosaic, the more detailed the image. The lower the number the less detailed and larger those pixels are to make up the image. PPI refers to how many pixels appear on a screen while DPI refers to how many pixels appear when printed.
Confusing I know but someone thought dividing them was a good idea. Or at least not renaming them when dot matrix printers became a thing of the past. Even more confusing is that there is no set standard for DPI.
Screens display pixels in fixed sizes and the pixel density is decided by the screen and not the image. Most HD monitors will display between 72 and ppi regardless of the image resolution. The DPI dots per inch of an image is simply metadata embedded inside the image header. The actual quality resolution of the image within the file itself is not affected when its DPI value is adjusted. The DPI value is read by some devices such as printers to determine how your image should be presented on a medium such as paper.
The printer would then output a larger number of dots for every inch, resulting in a sharper image. However, it is much simpler to change the DPI of an image using the tool provided above. Contact Us.
